What Must Match Before You Parallel Used Sets
- Frequency and voltage class — 50 Hz or 60 Hz confirmed; transformer and MV schemes designed before iron is paid for.
- Governor and AVR families — compatible droop or isochronous strategies; avoid mixing control philosophies that fight under load-share.
- Alternator pitch and impedance context — enough engineering to predict circulating currents and motor-start dips.
- Protection coordination — reverse power, loss of excitation, differential where justified, and clear trip hierarchies.
- Fuel and starting readiness — shared day tanks and filtration that do not starve one set while another runs clean.
- Black-start and dead-bus logic — which set is first online; how the bus rebuilds after a trip.
Load-Share Architectures That Survive Frontier Duty
Droop sharing remains common for rugged multi-unit houses: each machine settles to a share of kW and kVAr based on setpoint and droop settings. It is forgiving when communications are imperfect, but operators must understand that frequency and voltage move with load.
Isochronous with load-share links holds tighter frequency when the control network is healthy. Used fleets often need panel upgrades, new load-share modules, or a common plant controller before isochronous behaviour is trustworthy. Do not assume OEM year-of-manufacture alone guarantees plug-and-play paralleling.
Hybrid plant controllers — a station PLC or dedicated paralleling switchgear — give Extreme Ownership visibility: sequenced starts, soft loading, and recorded events for O&M. USP&E’s power plant EPC scope includes protection proving and commissioning so the architecture is witnessed, not hoped for.
Common questions
Does every set need its own load-bank certificate?
Individual proofs help, but the fleet still needs combined synchronising and load-share evidence under site BOP. See load-bank tested used diesels.
Where do hospitals and critical loads fit?
Standby hospitals need transfer timing and life-safety discipline as well as paralleling — see used diesel for hospitals standby and data-centre parallels on data centre solutions.

Why owners choose USP&E
USP&E is a full-service engineering, EPC and O&M company, not a broker. One team designs, builds and runs your plant, so nothing falls between contracts.
Is your fleet putting uptime at risk?
Tell us your load, fuel and timeline. A USP&E engineer will come back with options for Used Diesel Gensets projects, not a sales pitch.
