If you skip resistive load-bank proving, the risk is hidden wet-stacking, governor drift and cooling shortfalls that only appear in a real outage. A diesel that fails at the wrong moment can trip the bus, delay the turbine start and leave critical loads without power.
USP&E as Your Guide From Used Diesel to Gas
Stored diesel grows water and microbes. Hospitals that skip polishing and receiving samples discover clogged filters during the worst storm of the decade. Treat fuel quality as a commissioning and O&M artefact. Related site reading on verification: load-bank tested used diesels. Redeploy hygiene when second-hand sets arrive from other duties: major overhaul before redeploy.
Run Structured Resistive Load-Bank Audits
Test each used diesel in steps, typically from light load up to full rated output, holding each step long enough for temperatures to stabilise. Record kW, voltage, frequency, exhaust temperatures, coolant and oil temperatures and any smoke or leaks. A set that cannot hold full load or overheats at a step has told you something an hour meter never will.
Run sets that have spent years at light load at high load for a period first to burn off deposits, then repeat the test. Compare results against the manufacturer’s ratings and set clear retention criteria. That evidence decides which diesels stay for black-start or peaking, which need repair and which should retire.
Fit Proven Diesels Into the Mixed Fleet
Once you know which diesels stay, write their new role. Black-start sets need independent starting systems and regular tests. Peaking sets need governor and voltage regulator settings that share load properly with turbines. Your protection settings must account for the different fault contributions and response times of each machine.
Procedures should state which diesels start first, when a gas turbine may close onto the bus and how operators recover after a failed load step. Natural gas engines may bridge intermediate loads while diesels keep emergency duty. Keep load-bank testing on the maintenance calendar so proof does not expire.
Bridge to Gas and Plan for Growth
If gas is the true long-term fuel, overhauling diesel for a short bridge may still be correct — then migrate. Bridge themes: bridge used diesel to gas. Near-term GT screening: natural gas turbines.
Diesel fluid reports and GT borescope/control-generation themes are different tools for the same honesty standard. See the dedicated K2 companion on inspection themes diesel to used gas turbines.

Your path from first call to reliable power
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your diesel fleet list, hour records and test history. 2. Get load-bank audits and a migration plan with EPC and O&M scope. 3. Retain proven sets, add gas capacity and hand over one fleet file.
- Schedule resistive load-bank audits for used diesels; record kW steps, temperatures, and which units fail retention criteria.
- Rewrite start order, load-bank acceptance, training, and O&M for the mixed fleet with named roles.
Common questions
Why run resistive load banks on used diesels before adding a gas turbine?
USP&E runs load banks first because hour meters do not show whether a used diesel can carry full load. Wet-stacking, governor drift and cooling problems stay hidden until a real outage, and a weak set can trip the shared bus just when your gas turbine needs a stable start.
How should a resistive load-bank audit be run?
USP&E tests each set in load steps up to full rated output, holding each step until temperatures stabilise, and records kW, voltage, frequency, exhaust, coolant and oil temperatures. Sets with long light-load histories are run hard first to clear deposits, then retested against clear retention criteria.
Do load-bank acceptance criteria change in a mixed fleet?
USP&E adjusts acceptance criteria to each diesel’s new role. Black-start sets must prove reliable starting and full load quickly, while peaking sets must also share load properly with turbines. Criteria are written down, so every future test is judged the same way.
Why owners choose USP&E
USP&E is a full-service engineering, EPC and O&M company, not a broker. One team designs, builds and runs your plant, so nothing falls between contracts.
