Used Diesel Paralleling Path to GT
Your used diesel gensets came from different sites, fleets and controller generations, and you have made them share load. That takes work: sync settings, load-share lines and governor tuning that only some people on site understand. When gas turbines join the same bus, those settings will be tested in new ways.
If paralleling is not proven, you risk failed synchronising, reverse power trips, load hunting between machines and a bus that collapses during a step. That means downtime, damaged equipment and a turbine investment exposed to diesel problems.
USP&E Helps You Carry Paralleling Discipline into Turbines
We know how much skill it takes to make a mixed used fleet run as one station. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers inspect, rebuild, parallel and operate mixed diesel and turbine fleets, so we know where used machines hide paralleling problems. We work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Record What Every Used Set Actually Does
Log sync checks, load-share settings, governor and AVR modes, and fail modes on each of your used diesels. Note the controller type and software version, because a fleet of mixed controllers often shares load badly even when each set runs well alone.
Test your response to load steps on each set and record how it shares kW and kVAr with its neighbours. A machine that takes too much reactive load or hunts on frequency is a problem today and will be a bigger one when a turbine joins.
Write Turbine Sync and Load-Share Rules
Map which paralleling lessons apply when gas turbine generators join. Turbines and diesels respond differently to load steps, so you must decide how your load is shared: by droop, isochronous control on one lead machine or a plant controller that dispatches both fleets.
Write separate turbine sync and load-accept scripts beside the diesel settings. Sync-check windows, reverse power and loss-of-excitation protection need to be checked for each machine on the shared bus, with the real switchgear.
Plan what happens if one of your turbines trips. Your diesels must be able to pick up the lost load, or a load-shed scheme must act fast enough to keep the bus alive.
Bring every used set to a known controller baseline before you parallel with turbines. Where controllers are too old to support the load-share method you choose, plan a controller retrofit rather than relying on workarounds. One modern controller interface across the fleet makes your load sharing predictable and your fault-finding far faster.
Quarantine Weak Sets, Hold Cover and Grow
Quarantine diesels that fail paralleling proof before turbines rely on the bus. One bad set can drag your whole station into instability.
During upgrades, plan cover with natural gas engines/stations or a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, and keep verified used/new gas turbines available for longer works.
If your site grows into compute or data-centre load, the same paralleling rules scale with it. AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, including the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA, can join a proven bus under one hyperscale EPC/O&M team.
USP&E Teams Behind Your Used Diesel Genset Site
Remote sites need people who know frontier work. USP&E runs your used diesel fleet transition from Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineers plan mobilisation, spares and site supervision for projects far from the nearest service shop.
Further back in the chain, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles financing and contract structure for inspected used diesel gensets and gas turbine bridges; Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) secure US equipment, parts and engineering support; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) keeps Chinese-made switchgear and balance-of-plant moving.
For used diesel paralleling work, Johannesburg and Cape Town engineers can test sync and load sharing on your mixed fleet, while Colorado Springs reviews turbine protection settings before the bus is shared. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That team has carried 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
Proof from Recent Used Diesel Genset Projects
You want proof that USP&E has made mixed diesel and turbine fleets run as one station. These projects show that record.
- USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania.
- MAN redeployment, Iraq: USP&E moved a stranded 32 MW MAN plant, plus two surplus MAN generators, across four countries to an industrial buyer facing 12 to 18 month lead times for new engines. Read the case study.
- Zondereinde platinum mine, South Africa: USP&E supplied, packaged and serviced six zero-hour surplus Wabtec GE16V250 gensets, giving the mine 25 MW of base-load power through Eskom load shedding. Read the case study.
HowTo: Carry Paralleling into GT
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share controller lists, paralleling settings and bus studies under NDA. 2. Receive sync and load-share scripts, quarantine rules and a cover plan. 3. Prove the bus, then run it under accountable O&M.
- Log sync checks, load-share settings and fail modes on every used diesel.
- Map which paralleling lessons apply when gas turbine generators join.
- Write separate GT sync and load-accept scripts beside diesel settings.
- Quarantine diesels that fail paralleling proof before turbines rely on the bus.
- Plan cover with natural gas engines/stations or a remanufactured GE Frame 6B during upgrades.
- Trend shared bus evidence after turbines join under one O&M owner.

FAQ: Used Diesel Paralleling Path to GT
Why do used diesel gensets struggle to parallel with turbines?
USP&E sees mixed controllers, software versions and old governor settings cause poor load sharing even when each set runs well alone. Turbines respond to load steps differently, so those weaknesses show up fast. Your paralleling must be tested and reset before turbines join.
What should you test on each used diesel before sharing a bus?
USP&E tests sync checks, load-share settings, governor and AVR modes, load step response and fail modes. You record how each set shares kW and kVAr. A machine that takes too much reactive load or hunts on frequency must be fixed first.
How should load be shared between diesels and turbines?
USP&E chooses droop, isochronous control on one lead machine or a plant controller that dispatches both fleets. The right choice depends on your bus size and load steps. Each method needs clear settings and tests, so machines do not fight for load.
What happens if a turbine trips on a shared bus?
USP&E plans for diesels to pick up the lost load or for a load-shed scheme to act fast enough to keep the bus alive. Without that plan, one turbine trip can collapse the station and take your whole site dark.
Where are USP&E’s offices for used diesel and turbine projects?
USP&E anchors used diesel and turbine work in Johannesburg and Cape Town, where engineers test mixed fleets on site. London structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi supports China supply chain and manufacturing. Every office works from the same project file.
Has USP&E delivered mixed diesel and turbine fleets before?
USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies also include Kinross and other projects with accountable EPC and O&M. You can read each case study and judge the evidence yourself.
Is USP&E a broker for used diesel gensets?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power plants with its own engineers and project managers, so the team that proves your paralleling also runs the bus. You deal with one accountable team from first review to O&M.
How fast can USP&E respond to a paralleling review?
USP&E can start reviewing your controller list, paralleling settings and bus studies as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag the sets most likely to destabilise the bus first, then issue the scripts, with timing set by data quality and site access.
Make Your Mixed Fleet Run as One Station
Get paralleling right and your used diesels and new turbines share load smoothly through every step. Get it wrong and one badly tuned set destabilises the bus your turbines depend on. USP&E will help you test, script and run the station with confidence.
