A vague warranty can leave you with a failed genset and no remedy. The risks are downtime while you argue over cover, repair bills that the warranty excludes, a seller who is far away or no longer trading, and a claim refused because a condition was never met. That means lost production, delay and a cheap genset that becomes expensive.
USP&E Helps You Get a Warranty That Means Something
We know you want a used genset backed by a real promise. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers inspect, refurbish, supply, install and support used gensets and gas turbines. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
You do not need to refuse every used set without a long warranty. You need clear answers to a few questions, written into the deal, and an inspection that does not rely on the warranty at all.
Ask What Is Covered and for How Long
Ask the seller to list what the warranty covers: the engine, the alternator, the controls, the enclosure, or only certain parts. Ask whether it covers parts and labour, or parts only, and whether travel to your site is included. A warranty that covers parts but not labour or travel may be worth little on a remote site.
Ask how long it lasts, and what starts the clock: the date of sale, delivery, commissioning or the first run on load. Ask whether it is limited by run hours as well as time. A short warranty that starts on the sale date may have run out before the set is even installed.
Compare offers on the same basis. Browsing pre-owned diesel gensets in stock where the warranty terms are stated helps you see what is normal for refurbished and used units.
Read the Conditions and Exclusions
Most warranties have conditions: commissioning by an approved team, a load test on arrival, maintenance to a set schedule, use of approved fluids and parts, and records to prove it. Check you can meet every condition, and plan how you will record that you did. A claim is often refused because a condition was missed.
Read the exclusions carefully. Common ones include wear parts, damage from poor fuel or overloading, consequential losses and failures caused by installation. Ask about anything unclear in writing. If a used set has been refurbished, ask whether the warranty covers the refurbishment work, and see what genset refurbishment to as-new should include.
Check that the set meets the rules where it will run, because a warranty will not help if the set cannot be permitted. Our guide to emissions rules for diesel sets explains what to check.
Know Who Honours It and Inspect Anyway
Ask who will honour a claim and how fast they respond on your site. A warranty from a seller in another country with no local team means long delays. Ask for the claims process in writing: who to call, what evidence they need, and how long a decision takes. A warranty backed by the team that installs and maintains the set is worth more than one backed only by a distant seller.
Inspect the set anyway. A warranty covers some failures after the fact; an inspection and load test find problems before you pay. Use both: inspect, test and agree the warranty terms, then record the set’s condition on arrival as your baseline. Our sister site covers as-is or refurbished used generator choices.
Used diesels are often the first step to gas turbine generators. Your path may include used/new gas turbines, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or natural gas engines/stations, each with its own warranty terms to check. Data centre sites check the same with AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute under hyperscale EPC/O&M, including the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA.
Global Offices Behind Your Used Diesel Genset Programme
Your plant does not run on head-office time. USP&E anchors your used diesel fleet transition in Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit, close to the African sites USP&E has powered for years.
When inspected used diesel gensets and gas turbine bridges must be financed, sourced or shipped, London (162-168 Regent Street) structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) supports China supply chain and manufacturing.
For used genset warranties and claims, Johannesburg and Cape Town teams inspect and support sets on African sites, while Colorado Springs and Knoxville cover units in the US. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. One accountable team behind 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.

HowTo: Agree a Warranty on a Used Diesel Genset
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share the genset details and the warranty offered. 2. Receive a warranty review with questions and an inspection plan. 3. Inspect, buy and commission the set with support that answers.
- Ask the seller what parts and failures the warranty covers.
- Ask how long it lasts and what starts the clock.
- Check conditions such as commissioning, load test and maintenance records.
- Read the exclusions and ask about anything unclear in writing.
- Confirm who will honour claims and how fast they respond on your site.
- Inspect the unit anyway: a warranty does not replace an inspection.

FAQ: Used Diesel Genset Warranty: What to Ask
What should a used diesel genset warranty cover?
USP&E looks for clear cover of the engine, alternator and controls, with parts and labour and, ideally, travel to your site. A list of exactly what is covered, how long, and what starts the clock matters more than a long headline period with vague terms.
When does a used genset warranty start?
USP&E checks whether the clock starts at sale, delivery, commissioning or first run on load, and whether run hours limit it too. A short warranty that starts at sale may expire before the set is even installed, so ask for commissioning as the start.
Why are used genset warranty claims refused?
USP&E most often sees claims refused for missed conditions: no approved commissioning, no load test on arrival, maintenance not done or not recorded, or failures blamed on fuel or overloading. Meeting and recording every condition protects your claim. Keep copies of every record on site.
Does a warranty replace a used genset inspection?
USP&E advises that a warranty never replaces an inspection. A warranty covers some failures after the fact, while an inspection and load test find problems before you pay. Use both, and record the set’s condition on arrival as your baseline.
Where are USP&E’s offices for used genset support?
USP&E supports used gensets in Africa from Johannesburg and Cape Town, with engineers who travel to site. Colorado Springs and Knoxville cover units in the US, London handles contracts and finance, and Wuxi follows up parts and enclosures made in China.
Has USP&E delivered diesel genset projects before?
USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies include low-hour Cat 3516B gensets with new switchgear for Kinross Gold at Tasiast in Mauritania. Both sets of units served demanding mine sites.
Is USP&E a broker for used diesel gensets?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E inspects, refurbishes, installs and maintains gensets with its own engineers, so the team that reviews your warranty is the same team that commissions the set and responds when something goes wrong on your site.
How fast can USP&E review a used genset warranty?
USP&E can start as soon as you share the genset details and the warranty offered. Engineers flag missing cover, risky conditions and exclusions first, so you can ask the seller the right questions before you agree the deal. That keeps your deal moving without added risk.
Buy a Promise You Can Use
Check the warranty and inspect the set and your used genset arrives with real protection. Rely on a vague promise and the first failure is yours alone. USP&E will help you review, inspect and commission with confidence.
