Reading a Used Diesel Genset for Sale Listing

You have found a used diesel genset for sale that looks right: the rating is close, the price is attractive and the photos look clean. But a listing is written to sell the unit, and the details that decide whether it will run your site are often missing, vague or buried in shorthand.

If you buy from the listing alone, the risks show up after the money is paid: a prime-rated load on a standby-rated set, the wrong voltage or frequency, hours that cannot be proven, no recent load test, an enclosure that fails your noise rules and an emissions level your permit will not accept. That means downtime, failed inspections, delay to your project and a unit that costs more to fix than it saved.

USP&E Helps You Read Between the Lines of a Listing

We know you want a used set that arrives ready to work, at a fair price. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers inspect, buy, refurbish, install and maintain used gensets and gas turbines. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

You do not need to distrust every listing. You need to know which lines matter, which questions to ask, and when to book an inspection before you commit.

Check Rating, Duty, Voltage and Frequency First

Start with the rating and check what kind it is. Standby, prime and continuous ratings describe very different duties, and a set rated for standby will not last if you run it as your main supply every day. Look at the kVA and kW figures together and check the power factor they assume. If the listing gives only one number with no duty, ask.

Next check voltage and frequency. A set built for one frequency may run at the other only with derating or changes to the engine and alternator, and some cannot be converted at all. Check the alternator voltage range and the connection, and make sure it can be matched to your site switchboard without a transformer you did not plan for.

When you browse a diesel generator for sale listing, write down your own site needs first: load, duty, voltage, frequency, altitude and temperature. Then score the listing against them instead of letting the listing set the terms.

Look for Proof: Hours, Records and Load Tests

Hours on a listing mean little without proof. Ask for the hour meter photo, the service records and the dates and scope of any overhaul. A set with low hours and no records can be riskier than one with higher hours and a full history, because long idle periods bring their own problems such as wet stacking, seized parts and degraded seals.

Ask when the last load test was done, at what load and for how long, and whether you can see the test record. A short run on no load proves the engine starts, not that it carries your load. If no recent test exists, make a load bank test part of any deal and attend it yourself or have it witnessed.

Check the controls and the condition of the alternator too. Old controllers may lack the protection or the paralleling your site needs, and spares may be hard to find. If the unit needs work, refurbishing a used genset to as-new condition is often possible, but price that work before you compare offers.

Find What the Listing Leaves Out

Most listings skip the details that cost you money later. Check the enclosure type and its noise level, the fuel tank and whether it is integral or separate, the emissions level of the engine and whether your permit will accept it. Read diesel emission tiers explained before you decide, because a cheap set that cannot meet your permit is no bargain.

Ask where the unit sits today and what it will cost to load, ship, clear customs and install. A good price far from your site can lose its edge once freight and duties are added. Ask the seller to put every key answer in writing, then book an independent inspection before you commit to any unit.

Used diesels often bridge the gap until larger gas turbine generators arrive. Plan that path early, whether it leads to a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, other used/new gas turbines or natural gas engines/stations, so your cabling and switchgear fit the next stage. Data centre sites move on to AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute under hyperscale EPC/O&M, as they will with the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA. Proof from Recent Used Diesel Genset Projects

You want proof that USP&E has supplied and installed diesel gensets for demanding clients. These projects show that record.

  • USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania.
  • MAN redeployment, Iraq: USP&E moved a stranded 32 MW MAN plant, plus two surplus MAN generators, across four countries to an industrial buyer facing 12 to 18 month lead times for new engines. Read the case study.
  • Zondereinde platinum mine, South Africa: USP&E supplied, packaged and serviced six zero-hour surplus Wabtec GE16V250 gensets, giving the mine 25 MW of base-load power through Eskom load shedding. Read the case study.

HowTo: Check a Used Diesel Genset for Sale Listing

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share the listing and your site load, duty and voltage. 2. Receive a listing check with questions and an inspection plan. 3. Inspect, buy and commission the set with accountable O&M.

  1. Check the rating, duty, voltage and frequency against what your site needs.
  2. Look for hours, service records and the date of the last load test.
  3. Check the enclosure, controls and emissions level listed for the unit.
  4. Note what the listing leaves out and ask the seller for it in writing.
  5. Ask where the unit is and what it will cost to move, test and install.
  6. Book an inspection before you commit to any unit.

FAQ: Reading a Used Diesel Genset for Sale Listing

What should I check first on a used diesel genset listing?

USP&E checks the rating type first, whether standby, prime or continuous, then kVA and kW, voltage, frequency and alternator connection. These decide whether the set can carry your load in your duty. A listing that gives one number with no duty needs follow-up questions before anything else.

Are low hours on a used genset always good?

USP&E treats low hours with care. Without service records, low hours can hide long idle periods that cause wet stacking, seized parts and degraded seals. A set with higher hours and a complete, documented history can be the safer buy, so always ask for proof.

Do I need a load test before buying a used genset?

USP&E recommends a recent load bank test at your expected load, with a record you can see or a witnessed test. A short no-load run only proves the engine starts. A proper load test shows whether the set holds voltage, frequency and temperature under real work.

What do used genset listings usually leave out?

USP&E finds that listings often skip the enclosure noise level, fuel tank details, engine emissions level, controller type and the true cost of moving the unit. Ask the seller to answer each point in writing, then book an independent inspection before you commit to buy.

Where are USP&E’s offices for used genset projects?

USP&E leads used genset projects from Johannesburg and Cape Town for African yards and sites. Colorado Springs and Knoxville support US units, London supports contracts and finance, and Wuxi follows up enclosures, spare parts and other equipment made in China.

Has USP&E delivered diesel genset projects before?

USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies also include a Caterpillar backup station of low-hour Cat 3516B gensets with new switchgear for Kinross Gold at Tasiast, delivered on time and on budget.

Is USP&E a broker for used diesel gensets?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E inspects, refurbishes, installs and maintains gensets with its own people, so the team that checks the listing with you is the same team that tests the unit, commissions it on your site and answers for the result.

How fast can USP&E check a used genset listing?

USP&E can start as soon as you share the listing and your site load, duty and voltage. Engineers flag rating mismatches, missing records and emissions gaps first, so you know quickly whether the unit deserves an inspection or whether you should keep looking.

Buy the Set, Not the Sales Pitch

Check the listing properly and your used genset arrives ready to carry your load. Buy on photos and price alone and the gaps become downtime and repair bills. USP&E will help you check, buy and commission with confidence.
