Used Diesel Fuel Storage to GT
Your used diesel tanks look reusable until water, sludge or failed coatings show up in sampling. When gas turbines rely on those tanks for liquid-fuel backup, contamination can stop a start and leave your plant without cover during a gas outage.
You cannot polish a tank after the backup start has already failed. If storage reuse stops at a visual check, you are carrying start-fail risk into every dual-fuel path.
USP&E Helps You Carry Fuel Storage into GT
We know how hard it is to keep backup liquid fuel honest when old diesel tanks are pressed into turbine service. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers inspect tanks, raise polishing rules and quarantine failures when gas turbines reuse used diesel storage. We work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Inspect Tanks Before Turbines Depend on Them
Inspect used diesel tanks for water, sludge and coating condition before reuse. A clean manway photo is not a release.
Map which tanks will feed liquid-fuel trains on gas turbine generators. Shared headers without isolation are how one dirty tank spoils the train.
Write polishing and sampling rules tighter than diesel-only practice allows.
Pressure-test reused headers after cleaning and before turbines depend on them. A polish that looks clean in a sample bottle still fails if a dead leg dumps sludge on the first backup start. Your release should include that pressure test and a flush sample from the farthest takeoff.
Quarantine Leaking or Unlined Tanks
Quarantine leaking or unlined tanks that would contaminate turbine fuel. Prove water and particles after polish before release.
Plan tank cleaning windows with cover already booked, not hoped for.
Drop a water-finding paste or equivalent bottom sample on every candidate tank, including those that look dry at the manway. Thin water layers hide under fuel and still ruin a turbine liquid-fuel start. Your reuse gate should fail any tank that shows free water after polish until the source is found and fixed.
Plan Cover and Hand Tank Release Tests into O&M
Tank cleaning takes backup fuel offline, so plan cover before you open manways. A remanufactured GE Frame 6B or verified used/new gas turbines can carry critical load, and natural gas engines/stations can hold auxiliaries while the work finishes.
Trend water and particles after turbines join and update the CMMS with shared tank release tests. Leave room for later growth with used/new gas turbines on the same honest fuel rules.
If your company also runs compute or campus load elsewhere, the same discipline carries over. AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute need the same rigour, and later blocks such as the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA can join a spine run by one hyperscale EPC/O&M team. Clean storage discipline then scales into campus growth without dirty backup starts.
Cap and label every takeoff after polish so idle legs cannot recontaminate the train. An open takeoff undoes a week of cleaning. Your release walk should include a physical check that every cap is fitted before turbines are allowed to depend on the farm.

FAQ: Used Diesel Fuel Storage to GT
Why do used diesel tanks fail turbine backup starts?
USP&E sees water, sludge and failed coatings contaminate liquid-fuel trains on gas turbine generators. Your polishing rules must be tighter than diesel-only practice. A visual check never clears a backup tank. Your team stays in control of the decision at every step.
What tank inspection clears reuse?
USP&E checks coatings, water bottoms, sludge and sample particle counts after polish. Your release should fail if any manway shows active corrosion into the fuel. Your team stays in control of the decision at every step. Share your data under NDA to begin.
How do you isolate one dirty tank?
USP&E maps headers with isolation so one failed tank cannot spoil the train. Your P&ID should show that isolation before turbines depend on the farm. Your team stays in control of the decision at every step. Share your data under NDA to begin.
What cover should you plan during tank cleaning?
USP&E plans natural gas engines/stations or a remanufactured GE Frame 6B while tanks are open. You set cover before cleaning, so backup fuel work does not become an outage. Your team stays in control of the decision at every step.
Where are USP&E’s offices that support this work?
USP&E anchors used diesel fuel storage work in Johannesburg and Cape Town, where fuel engineers sit close to your tank farm. London structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi supports China supply chain and manufacturing. Every office works from the same project file.
Has USP&E delivered power projects like this before?
USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies also cover Barrick, Resolute and Kinross, where accountable EPC and O&M kept industrial power online. You can read each case study and judge the evidence yourself.
Is USP&E a broker for this equipment?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power plants with its own engineers and project managers, so the team that clears your tanks stays accountable when backup fuel is called. You deal with one accountable team from first review to O&M.
How fast can USP&E respond on this topic?
USP&E can start reviewing your tank lists, sample results and dual-fuel drawings as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag dirty bottoms first, then issue polishing rules, with timing set by data quality and site access. Your team stays in control of the decision at every step.
