Used Diesel Vibration Survey to GT
Your used diesel gensets may look tidy and still shake themselves apart. Worn mounts, misalignment, loose baseframes, bearing wear and imbalance all show up as vibration, and a unit that vibrates badly will crack pipework, loosen connections and fail early once it is back in service.
If you buy or redeploy without a vibration survey, you inherit faults you never priced. That means repair costs, delays and unplanned outages on the site that was counting on the power.
USP&E Helps You Run Used Diesel Vibration Surveys
We know a used genset purchase often happens fast, and vibration is the test most buyers skip. USP&E brings 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers survey vibration on used diesel fleets, find the causes and compare repair costs with gas turbine or gas engine upgrades. We work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
A vibration survey is quick, cheap and revealing. Done under real load, it tells you more about mechanical health than a walk-around ever will.
Load the Unit Before You Measure
Run each used genset under real load, ideally on a load bank, until it reaches normal operating temperature before you take readings. An engine idling with no load hides many of the faults you are looking for.
Record the load, speed and temperatures at the time of each reading, so you can compare units fairly and repeat the survey later.
Check the basics before you start: holding-down bolts, mounts, guards and loose panels. A rattling cover can mislead an inexperienced surveyor. Note the condition of the baseframe and any welded repairs, because cracked frames often explain readings that mounts alone do not.
Measure at Fixed Points and Compare
Measure vibration at fixed points you can find again on the engine, the alternator bearings and the mounts, in more than one direction. Mark the points so the survey can be repeated on the same spots.
Compare readings with the maintenance manual or recognised limits, and between similar units in the same lot. A unit that reads much higher than its sisters deserves a closer look even if it is inside the limit.
Investigate high readings. Common causes are failed mounts, misalignment between engine and alternator, bearing wear, coupling damage and imbalance. The pattern of readings often points to the cause. If it is not clear, a specialist with spectrum analysis can separate engine, alternator and mounting faults before you commit to repairs.
Price the Fixes and Keep the Baseline
Price repairs for each unit you survey and add them to the purchase or redeployment decision. A cheap genset that needs new mounts, realignment and alternator bearings may no longer be cheap.
Compare the total with the alternatives: gas turbine generators, natural gas engines/stations, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or verified used/new gas turbines may give better value where the site needs long-running power rather than standby. Standby and continuous duty stress an engine very differently, so a unit fit for standby may not survive long-running work.
Keep your survey as a baseline. Repeat it after installation and at intervals, so changes show up early. Fleets that move on to hyperscale EPC/O&M work, alongside AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, are trended the same way, and New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA will run under vibration monitoring that starts from a recorded baseline.
USP&E Teams Behind Your Used Diesel Genset Site
Remote sites need people who know frontier work. USP&E runs your used diesel fleet transition from Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineers plan mobilisation, spares and site supervision for projects far from the nearest service shop.
Further back in the chain, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles financing and contract structure for inspected used diesel gensets and gas turbine bridges; Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) secure US equipment, parts and engineering support; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) keeps Chinese-made switchgear and balance-of-plant moving.
For used diesel vibration surveys, Johannesburg and Cape Town engineers can load-test and survey your gensets with the yard or site crew and price fixes before money changes hands. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That team has carried 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.

FAQ: Used Diesel Vibration Survey to GT
Why survey vibration on a used diesel genset?
USP&E uses vibration surveys to find worn mounts, misalignment, bearing wear and imbalance before you buy or redeploy. Your unit may look tidy but still vibrate enough to crack pipework and fail early. A survey under load reveals what a walk-around cannot.
Should the genset be loaded during the survey?
USP&E always surveys under real load, ideally on a load bank, at normal operating temperature. An idling engine hides many faults. You also record load, speed and temperatures at each reading, so units can be compared fairly and surveys repeated later.
What causes high vibration on used gensets?
USP&E most often finds failed mounts, misalignment between engine and alternator, bearing wear, coupling damage and imbalance. Your reading pattern usually points to the cause. Loose covers and panels can also mislead the survey, so your surveyor should check them first.
Can a vibration survey change the buying decision?
USP&E prices the repairs each survey reveals and adds them to the purchase or redeployment cost. Your cheap genset may need mounts, realignment and bearings. Sometimes that total makes a gas turbine or gas engine option better value for long-running power.
Where are USP&E’s offices that support used diesel fleets?
USP&E supports used diesel fleets from Johannesburg and Cape Town, close to African yards and sites. London handles contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville cover US equipment and turbines, and Wuxi supports China manufacturing. Every office works from your project file.
Has USP&E delivered used equipment projects before?
USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies also cover Kinross, where USP&E supplied and installed a backup power station of low-hour Cat gensets. You can read each case study yourself.
Is USP&E a broker for used gensets?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that inspects, supplies, installs and operates power equipment with its own engineers, so the team that surveys your gensets also stands behind them once they are back in service on your site.
How fast can USP&E respond on a vibration survey?
USP&E can start planning your survey as soon as you share the unit list, maintenance records and site details under NDA. Engineers flag high-risk units first, then arrange load testing, with timing set by the location of the units and access.
Know How Your Used Gensets Really Run
Get the vibration survey right and you buy or redeploy with faults priced and fixed. Get it wrong and the first sign is cracked pipework, a failed bearing and an outage. USP&E will help you survey, price and decide with confidence.
