Used Diesel Governor and AVR Check to GT

Your used genset may have a sound engine and a clean alternator, but its governor and voltage regulator decide how it behaves on your site. They hold speed and voltage steady as load changes, share load with other sets and protect your equipment from swings. On older units they are often worn, mis-set or obsolete.

If you buy without checking them, the first heavy load step can send speed and voltage swinging, trip your sensitive loads or stop the set paralleling with the rest of your fleet. You may then face an emergency control upgrade, a hunt for parts nobody makes any more and weeks of delay before the set can carry your load.

USP&E Helps You Check Used Diesel Governors and AVRs

We know that a used genset is only a bargain when it holds speed and voltage under real load. USP&E brings 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers test governors, actuators and voltage regulators on used gensets and plan control upgrades so buyers know what they are getting. We work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

You do not need to rebuild the controls to judge them. You need to know what is fitted, how it has been set and repaired, and how it behaves on a load bank before you pay.

Know What Controls Are Fitted

Identify the governor, actuator and automatic voltage regulator on each used genset. Older units may have mechanical or hydraulic governors, while newer ones use electronic governors linked to engine controls. Record the make, model and firmware version where there is one.

Ask the seller for settings records, repair history and any control upgrades. A governor that has been replaced or reset several times may be hiding a deeper engine or fuel problem. A voltage regulator replaced with a non-standard model may not match your paralleling gear.

Check that spares and support still exist for the parts fitted. Obsolete actuators and regulators are common on older sets, and an unobtainable part turns a simple fault into a long outage for you.

Test Speed and Voltage on a Load Bank

Run each set on a load bank and watch speed and voltage through load steps up and down. Look for overshoot, slow recovery, hunting at steady load and any instability as load changes. Record the results so you can compare sets fairly.

Check droop and isochronous settings if the set will share load with others. A governor set for standalone duty may not share load properly in parallel, and the same is true for voltage regulators sharing reactive load. These are settings you can fix, but you need to know about them.

Test protection linked to the controls as well, such as overspeed and over-voltage. A control fault that also disables protection is a serious risk for your site and your equipment.

Price Repairs and Compare Your Options

Price control repairs or upgrades before you agree the deal. A modern governor and regulator kit may cost far less than the delays caused by an obsolete one, but it is still a cost you should count in the price you pay.

Compare against what gas turbines would need. Your gas turbine generators and natural gas engines/stations use their own control systems with different load response, and a mixed fleet must share load cleanly. A remanufactured GE Frame 6B or verified used/new gas turbines may suit you better if your site is growing.

Buyers moving toward compute loads face tighter control demands. Under hyperscale EPC/O&M, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute are tested for load-step response before acceptance, and New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA is planned for phased capacity. We can help you judge which path fits your load.

Global Offices Behind Your Used Diesel Genset Programme

Your plant does not run on head-office time. USP&E anchors your used diesel fleet transition in Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit, close to the African sites USP&E has powered for years.

When inspected used diesel gensets and gas turbine bridges must be financed, sourced or shipped, London (162-168 Regent Street) structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) supports China supply chain and manufacturing.

For used genset control checks, Johannesburg and Cape Town engineers can run load bank tests with your team, review governor and AVR settings and price any upgrade before you sign. Proof from Recent Used Diesel Genset Projects

You want proof that USP&E has inspected, supplied and delivered diesel genset projects that perform under real load. These projects show that record.

  • USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania.
  • MAN redeployment, Iraq: USP&E moved a stranded 32 MW MAN plant, plus two surplus MAN generators, across four countries to an industrial buyer facing 12 to 18 month lead times for new engines. Read the case study.
  • Zondereinde platinum mine, South Africa: USP&E supplied, packaged and serviced six zero-hour surplus Wabtec GE16V250 gensets, giving the mine 25 MW of base-load power through Eskom load shedding. Read the case study.

HowTo: Check Used Diesel Governors and AVRs

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share genset details, settings records and repair history under NDA. 2. Receive a control check plan and load bank test scope. 3. Test, price and buy, then maintain your sets under accountable O&M.

  1. Identify the governor, actuator and voltage regulator type on each used genset.
  2. Ask for settings records, repair history and any control upgrades.
  3. Run the set on a load bank and watch speed and voltage on load steps.
  4. Check that spares and support are still available for the control parts.
  5. Compare the controls with what gas turbine generators or natural gas engines/stations would need.
  6. Price control repairs or upgrades before you agree the deal.

FAQ: Used Diesel Governor and AVR Check to GT

Why check the governor on a used diesel genset?

USP&E checks the governor because it controls engine speed as load changes. A worn, mis-set or obsolete governor can cause speed swings, poor load sharing and trips. Testing before purchase shows whether the set will hold steady on your site or needs work first.

What does an AVR do on a genset?

USP&E explains that the automatic voltage regulator controls the alternator’s output voltage and, in parallel, its share of reactive load. A faulty or mismatched regulator can cause voltage swings, damage sensitive equipment and stop the set paralleling cleanly with your fleet.

How does a load bank test reveal control problems?

USP&E uses load steps on a load bank to watch speed and voltage overshoot, recovery time and stability. Hunting at steady load or slow recovery after a step points to control or fuel problems. You should record each result so sets can be compared fairly.

Are obsolete governors and regulators a real risk?

USP&E often finds older sets fitted with actuators and regulators that are no longer made. When one fails, an unobtainable part can keep the set down for weeks. You should confirm spares and support exist, or price an upgrade into the deal.

Where are USP&E’s offices that support used genset buyers?

USP&E supports used genset buyers from Johannesburg and Cape Town, where engineers inspect and test sets. London handles contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville support US inventory and turbine supply, and Wuxi follows up control kits and equipment made in China.

Has USP&E delivered diesel genset projects before?

USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. USP&E also supplied and installed a backup power station of low-hour Cat gensets for Kinross at Tasiast, a public case study. You can read both and judge the record yourself.

Is USP&E a broker for used gensets?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E inspects, supplies, installs and maintains generator sets with its own engineers, so the team that tests your governors and regulators is the same team that commissions the sets and answers for how they run.

How fast can USP&E respond to a control check request?

USP&E can start reviewing your genset details, settings records and repair history as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag obsolete parts and missing records first, then plan load bank tests around site access, the seller’s schedule and your purchase timeline.

Buy a Genset That Holds Steady

Check the governor and AVR and your used genset holds speed and voltage under every load step. Skip it and the first heavy load can trip your site and force an emergency upgrade. USP&E will help you test, price and buy with confidence.
